China Launches New Medium Earth Orbit COMSATs

China launched the first Smart SkyNet MEO broadband satellites on 9 May 2024, beginning an eight-satellite 20,000km communications constellation.

9 May 2024: China launched a Long March-3B from Xichang carrying two satellites destined for Medium Earth Orbit (MEO). Smart SkyNet-1 01 (A/B) are described as China’s first medium-orbit broadband communications satellites and part of the Smart Skynet network. The planned first set consists of eight satellites in roughly 20,000km-altitude orbits, with expansion options to 16 or 32 spacecraft. A global MEO constellation would complement China’s plans for a large LEO communications constellation and its existing GEO satellites. Launch Video.

– The satellites were developed by CASC’s Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST) for Shanghai Tsingshen Technology Development Co. Ltd. Tsingshen Tech was founded in 2018 and is collaborating with Tsinghua University and the Shanghai government on the MEO broadband constellation. Source article.

– Smart Skynet-1 (01) satellite A is equipped with a multi-beam high-speed microwave link, an inter-satellite two-way laser link, and an onboard digital processing and forwarding platform.

– Satellite B carries an inter-satellite laser-link experiment payload. On-orbit activities will include validation of flexible inter-satellite links and satellite-to-ground transmission.

– SAST states that Smart Skynet could connect with China’s LEO communications megaconstellations and GEO communications satellites, providing multi-orbit connectivity.

Editor’s Note from the issue: multi-orbital-regime connectivity is extremely resilient and useful for maritime operations in a contested environment.

– A June 2021 press release described Smart Skynet as eight satellites deployed in a 20,000km orbit, using inter-satellite links to provide continuous global coverage including the North and South Poles.

– The release described an initial launch of two test satellites and the intent to complete deployment of the first eight-satellite set by 2025.

With eight satellites on orbit, the issue reports total communications bandwidth capacity of more than 200Gbps and support for more than 500,000 users; later satellite sets would increase capacity to the Tbps level.
