16 May 2024: New information from U.S. government officials indicated that Cosmos-2553, launched in Feb 2022 just before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, was designed to test components for a nuclear space-based weapon. U.S. officials told The Wall Street Journal that Cosmos-2553 is not itself armed with a nuclear device, but is part of Moscow’s ongoing anti-satellite program.
