Russia Launches Cosmos-2576…And More!

Russia's 16 May 2024 Soyuz mission placed a mixture of civilian and military payloads into three LEO regimes, including the newly cataloged Cosmos-2576.

16 May 2024: Russia launched a Soyuz 2.1b from Plesetsk Cosmodrome carrying roughly 9-11 satellites to three different low-Earth orbits. There was ongoing discussion about the exact number and nature of the payloads. At the time of the issue, the Space-Track catalog showed nine objects: one object presumed to be Cosmos-2576 in a 448 x 432km orbit, five objects in roughly 548 x 533km orbits, and three objects in 793 x 777km orbits. – Moscow-based Sputniks announced the successful launch of four SITRO-AIS satellites, used for tracking ships through Automatic Identification System data, and two Zorky-2M imagery satellites. Russia had previously launched SITRO-AIS and Zorky-2M together into similar orbits.

– Orbital Focus identified Cosmos-2576 as the object in the 448 x 432km orbit and suggested it may carry sensors for observing or monitoring other satellites, and possibly an Earth-imaging system. – The three objects in the higher 793 x 777km orbit were also classified as military satellites with unknown missions.

– The issue notes the nearest active Russian satellites it could identify at comparable altitude were Meteor-M2 satellites, though with semi-major axes about 24km greater.

– Orbital Focus listed four SITRO-AIS and two Zorky-2M satellites in the 548 x 533km orbit and assumed two additional objects would eventually be identified, one likely the Fregat upper stage and another possibly SITRO-AIS or Zorky-2M.

– Marco Langbroek noted Cosmos-2576 was about 53.5km lower than a typical BARS-M orbit, suggesting something new. Its RAAN and inclination were close to USA-314, with approaches of roughly 340km every 1.4 days in the then-current orbit. See discussion.

Bart Hendryckx’s working interpretation was six civilian CubeSats plus three military satellites, with the three higher-orbit objects possibly being a trio of Razbeg/14F169 satellites. The issue notes later behavior would be needed to clarify the mission.
