MEV-1 Support to Optus D3: Doing the Math

I thought the potential MEV-1/Optus D3 RPO provided an ideal opportunity to run through the math required to determine fuel/energy requirements to conduct such an operation. So I passed the basic orbital information to my Integrity ISR colleague Jason Dean and he did the rest! Bottom Line: MEV-1 will require ΔV (fuel) of 45.9 m/sec to plane-match and RPO with Optus D3.

MEV-1 orbit history used for the rendezvous and plane-matching calculations (celestrak.org).

Optus D3 orbit history used for the rendezvous and plane-matching calculations (celestrak.org).

MEV-1 to Optus D3 calculation steps 1-4: orbital radius, specific mechanical energy and velocity terms.

MEV-1 to Optus D3 calculation steps 5-6: transfer-burn velocity and Optus D3 orbital-energy terms.

MEV-1 to Optus D3 calculation steps 7-10: final-burn velocity change and transfer time.

Plane-change calculation used to match MEV-1’s inclination with Optus D3, contributing to the combined delta-V estimate.
