Russian Official News Outlet: “Space, rotting from the inside: Russia is going out of orbit”

A Russian state-aligned newspaper published a strikingly critical assessment of Roscosmos and the broader Russian space program in December 2021.

17 Dec 2021: Russian state-aligned newspaper Moscovsky Komsomolets published a long and unusually critical article reviewing the state of the Russian space program. Western observers had long described the program as deeply troubled, but the notable point was that a major Russian outlet presented the criticism to a domestic audience.

– The article argued Russia increasingly projects greatness in space through symbolic acts rather than technological achievements, citing a movie-star launch, the Fedor robot and repeated promises of a Moon landing.

– Because the piece appeared in a state-sanctioned newspaper, it was exempt from recently declared restrictions affecting independent media reporting on space activities.

– The article described shortages of skilled staff, obsolete facilities and technology, and systemic leadership weakness. It also argued that some Soyuz and Progress systems still depended on chemical supplies produced by a German company.

– Since 2019, more than 60 criminal investigations were said to have been initiated, with total losses assessed at more than 5 billion rubles.

– Roscosmos repeatedly fell short of announced launch totals: 25 of 44 planned launches in 2019, 17 of 40 in 2020, and fewer than half of 47 planned launches in 2021.

The article portrayed Roscosmos as an increasingly decrepit enterprise with too little investment in current and future capability, high salaries for senior technocrats, and much lower wages for technical specialists who build rockets and spacecraft.
