China Launches Tech Verification Satellite

ExPace launched the Chuangxin-16 technology-verification payload on a Kuaizhou-1A from Xichang on 23 August 2022.

23 Aug 2022: CASC subsidiary ExPace launched a Kuaizhou-1A from Xichang carrying the Chuangxin-16 payload, developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The spacecraft will reportedly be used for verification of new technologies. There is some confusion over the number of satellites carried to orbit, either one or two. Launch Video.

– The KZ-1A can fly payloads up to 300kg into low Earth orbit. This launch delivered its payload into a 600 x 594km, 29° inclined orbit.

– Reports indicate the Chuangxin-16 payload is actually two satellites, named A and B. Because only one object had been tracked in orbit, the two satellites might separate later, may have failed to separate, may not be intended to separate, or the second vehicle may launch separately.

– The Chuangxin, translated as “innovation,” payload is meant for technology research. One possible demonstration would be automated undocking, rendezvous and re-docking of the two satellites, but the final mission plan was not yet clear.

– The flight marked the 16th launch of the Kuaizhou-1A series, with 14 successful missions, and the first ExPace launch from Xichang.
