China Spaceplane Clues

China's reusable experimental spacecraft remained in orbit in August 2022, while launch-fairing details, tracking and Lop Nur activity provided clues about the mission.

16 Aug 2022: China’s reusable experimental spacecraft remained in orbit and recently increased its altitude from 346 x 593km to 351 x 595km. While the launch and payload remained shrouded in secrecy, China publicly displayed the modified fairing from the launch. See video of the fairing.

– China’s most secretive but not quite hidden spacecraft was already shattering the country’s previous known record for flight of an unmanned spaceplane.

– The size of the rocket fairing, amateur observations and U.S. Space Force tracking all pointed to a vehicle similar in concept to the U.S. X-37B, but smaller.

– If the visible fairing bumps are spare spaces for wings, the vehicle’s wingspan could be larger than the fairing’s 4.2m diameter.

– As with the 2020 spaceplane mission, it appeared that at least one smaller satellite was released alongside the spaceplane.

– When it lands, the vehicle is expected to touch down horizontally at a landing strip near Lop Nur. Satellite imagery showed recent activity near the strip, which is also believed to have supported the 2020 mission.

– The project appears consistent with reusable space-transportation development plans from CASC and its subsidiaries.

– China’s Jan 2022 space white paper stated the country would continue strengthening research into key technologies for reusable space transportation systems and conduct test flights accordingly.
