Solar Storms Leave Intelsat’s Galaxy 15 Inoperable

Intelsat lost command communications with Galaxy 15 after a geomagnetic storm in August 2022, echoing a lengthy outage the satellite suffered in 2010.

23 Aug 2022: Intelsat lost communications with one of its satellites after it was presumably disabled by space weather. The company was attempting to regain control of the Galaxy 15 broadcast satellite after a disruption on 19 Aug. Intelsat said a geomagnetic storm likely knocked out onboard electronics needed to communicate with the satellite. Galaxy 15, launched in 2006, experienced a similar outage in 2010. Source.

– The satellite was otherwise operating nominally, remaining Earth-pointing with payload operations nominal.

– Intelsat was moving Galaxy 15 customers to other satellites so engineers could continue attempts to regain command. The plan was then to deorbit the satellite.

– Galaxy 15 operates in geostationary orbit near 133°W and provides media coverage to the Americas.

– In 2010, Intelsat lost contact with Galaxy 15 for more than eight months before the spacecraft began accepting commands again after its batteries fully drained and triggered a reset.

– NOAA issued a warning on 16 Aug for a category G3 geomagnetic storm, stating that impacts to technology from a G3 storm are usually minimal.

Throughout 2022, solar activity produced major flares and coronal mass ejections, suggesting the Sun was becoming more active as it moved out of a quieter phase of its roughly 11-year activity cycle.
