Satellite Refueling Contract Signed

Astroscale and Orbit Fab signed an agreement to refuel future LEXI GEO servicing spacecraft with xenon propellant.

11 Jan 2022: Astroscale and Orbit Fab announced an agreement for Orbit Fab’s in-space refueling tankers to refuel Astroscale’s geostationary satellite-servicing spacecraft known as LEXI, short for Life Extension In-Orbit. See Video Rendition.

– The agreement commits Orbit Fab to supply up to 1,000kg of xenon propellant to refuel LEXI vehicles, with the first projected launch in 2026.

– LEXI is intended to provide station keeping, attitude control, momentum management, inclination correction, GEO relocation and retirement to graveyard orbit.

– Orbit Fab developed the RAFTI (Rapidly Attachable Fluid Transfer Interface) refueling port for government and commercial spacecraft.

– Orbit Fab had deployed its first propellant-storage tanker in LEO and planned a GEO tanker carrying more than 200 pounds of hydrazine.

– The company expected to deploy dozens of tankers and shuttles in LEO and GEO during the following five to ten years.

Both companies’ core offerings are designed to extend satellite life. Astroscale is integrating RAFTI into LEXI alongside its rendezvous and docking technology.
