SJ-21 Separates from AKM, RPOs w/ Defunct Beidou

SJ-21 ended stationkeeping with its subsatellite and then conducted rendezvous and proximity operations near a defunct Beidou satellite.

1 Jan 2022: The SJ-21 satellite, launched in October, had released a subsatellite around 1 Nov and performed rendezvous maneuvers to remain close to it until 26 Dec.

– On 26 Dec the main SJ-21 spacecraft maneuvered into an elliptical orbit while the subsatellite moved above the GEO belt and began traversing west.

– After ending stationkeeping with its subsatellite, SJ-21 rendezvoused with a defunct Beidou navigation satellite from 26 Dec through 8 Jan.

– Shijian-21 launched to GTO on 23 Oct aboard a Long March 3B and was placed into an approximately 8-degree inclined GEO orbit.

– Chinese state media said SJ-21 would “test and verify space debris mitigation technologies,” but provided no additional mission details.
