TJSW-9 Settles In

TJSW-9 settled near 137°E and was assessed as a likely continuation of China's CAST-built geostationary SIGINT series.

7 Jan 2022: China’s TJS-9, launched 29 Dec, settled into GEO near 137°E.

– TJSW-9 was manufactured by CAST, which also produced TJSW-1 and TJSW-4, spacecraft believed to support SIGINT collection and testing of multi-band, high-speed military communications.

– The issue assesses TJSW-9 as likely continuing this SIGINT satellite series.

– SAST produced TJSW-2, -5, -6 and -7. TJSW-2, -5 and -6 were assessed as resembling missile early-warning satellites similar in role to U.S. SBIRS.

– The role of TJSW-7 remained debated. TJSW-3 had been identified by some sources as a GEO-belt “inspector satellite” after unusual post-launch interactions with its apogee kick motor.
